What Is the Einbürgerungstest?

The Einbürgerungstest (German citizenship test) is an official exam administered by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge, BAMF) as part of the German naturalization process. It tests applicants' knowledge of German politics, history, society, and the legal and social order of life in Germany.

The test is based on an official catalog of 310 questions: 300 general questions covering all of Germany and 10 questions specific to the applicant's Bundesland (federal state). During the actual exam, 33 multiple-choice questions are randomly selected, and applicants must answer at least 17 out of 33 correctly (51.5%) to pass.

The same question catalog is also used for the "Leben in Deutschland" (Life in Germany) test taken at the end of an integration course. The only difference is the passing threshold: 15 out of 33 for Leben in Deutschland vs. 17 out of 33 for Einbürgerungstest.
